Matt got up out of the chair as Tam entered his office. “What happened?” he asked, staring at the dressing that was taped to the side of Tam’s head, and also noticing that his DC was limping slightly.

“I got assaulted,” Tam said.

Matt frowned and asked, “By whom?”

“I didn’t get a look at his face. It was dark and he came up behind me.”

“So you were mugged?”

“No, boss, it was personal. I’ll work it out.”

“Do you need help?”

“Thanks, but no. It’s private business.”

“So you know who it was, and why he did it?”

Tam nodded.

“You look like shit,” Matt said. “Take twenty-four hours off and rest up.”

“But I don’t need―”

“That was an order, Tam, not a suggestion. I want you back at one hundred percent and without something distracting you. Sort it, and don’t go too far over the line. And if you decide you do need backup, don’t be too proud to ask. We’re a team, and that’s on and off the clock.”

“Thanks,” Tam said and left. He had what he needed, time to seek out and deal with Johnny Spiers.
